Low handicap golfers all have the same key elements in their wedge play . Below are descriptions of those key steps.

1. Be Sure Your Stance Is Open

Good wedge players keep the lower body quiet . You don’t need a lot of power to hit a wedge and you don’t need a lot of lower body involvement . But you can’t hit a sound wedge shot without opening your hips. The open stance allows you to use your arms and shoulders to hit the shot without requiring the help of your lower body.

2. Allow the Wrists to Hinge

Poor players try sweeping, scooping, or lifting the ball in the air with a wedge . Good players hit down and through, creating a divot. One of the secrets to hitting down is wrist hinge. If you don’t hinge your wrists, you’ll sweep the ball of the floor . Hinge early in the backswing. Start your wrist bend in the start of take away. Keep your hands low after impact on a full-swing wedge shot, almost as if you were about to shake hands with someone to the side of you. Why? One sign of a solid wedge shot is low hands after impact, which indicates hitting down and through. Finishing high tends to negate weight shift and hinders your ability to hit down and through the ball. So keep it low after impact and you’ll approve the result.

The subconscious mind is an incredible piece of technology , it stores everything we do as memories. The only drawback with this is the subconscious mind cannot separate between good and bad memories. The vast majority of people go through their lives using these memories that are replaying in their mind. This is why people develop a lot of habits and are unable to break them .  

So how can we re-program our mind in order to  act more on inspiration and only rely on the good memories we have stored?

There are loads  of ways  you can use to try and reprogram your mind. The biggest problem is that the majority of people are just so cynical  about doing things differently  .  I candidly believe that you should try these things with an open mind  presuming  they will make a difference.

Visualisation is a fun tool to use , anybody can do this – we all have dreams .  When you are going to take a shot  just picture in your mind you making the perfect golf swing and see  the ball fly  into the distance and land exactly where you aimed it. Feels great  doesn’t it.  Be sure to use this technique for all your shots  , including putting.

Never be negative on the golf course.  As soon as you say something negative you are putting this thought into your mind.  You must  realise how powerful the mind is – if I say to you “don’t think about a big blue flying pig ” I bet you have that image right now in your mind?  You must be positive on the golf course, always imagine and state that you are going to make a great shot.

Reign in  your emotions on the course. If you see players throwing clubs around you can practically guarantee that their next shot will probably be a poor one  .

One other area that is being used more and more for mind training is NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming). NLP is the modern science of the mind it uses physiology and the unconscious mind to adapt thought processes which means that negative habits and behaviour can be changed into positive ones . These are recordings that will put you into a light trance and then make suggestions to your subconcious mind.  Sounds strange but I have tested them and have never felt so relaxed.  Keep an open mind and try it out .

So these are a few ideas for you to think about . To put it simply – in golf as it is in life – if you can’t imagine it you will never accomplish it!

Get 6 tees and place them on the ground, about 2 clubhead widths between each tee. set    your ball on the second, forth, and sixth tee. Swing your club just like you would any other pitch shot, on the first tee.  You want to try and knock your tee out of the ground. Your swing will be the same throughout the forth and sixth pitch.  Your pitch shots in golf will get better if you practice doing this I know it doesn’t sound like it would help, but I have done it, and it works.

Why is this important?  This gets you in a habit to swing down when pitching the ball. This will prevent you from hitting up and catching the shot thin.  You want to fight the target side of your ball into the grass. You will make better contact with the ball when pitching.

You can also practice your pitch shots with your right heal raised off the ground. The majority of your weight will be on your left foot. You will be positioned forward and it will convey a downward move, hitting the ball in front of it, and not behind it.
